Screenshot A/B testing

Test which screenshots convert better before you commit.

Plan App Store and Google Play screenshot A/B tests. Learn which screenshot order, caption style, and visual approach drives more installs — before you lock in your final store design.

What developers usually complain about

You spent hours designing screenshots but have no idea if they actually convert.

Your app gets impressions but your conversion rate is below 5%.

You copied a competitor's screenshot style but it doesn't match your app's personality.

You want to test different first screenshots but don't know how to set up the experiment.

How to fix it before launch

  1. 1Choose one variable to test: first screenshot, caption style, or screenshot order.
  2. 2Create 2-3 variants that differ only on that one variable.
  3. 3Set up the experiment in App Store Connect (PPO) or Google Play Console (Experiments).
  4. 4Run the test for at least 7 days and until you reach statistical significance.
  5. 5Apply the winning variant and plan the next test.

Before and after examples

Before

Testing everything at once

Better

Test only the first screenshot this week. Next week, test caption style.

Before

Ending the test after 2 days

Better

Wait 7-14 days for statistically meaningful results — small sample sizes lie.

FAQ

How long should I run an A/B test?

Apple recommends at least 7 days. Run until you have at least 100 conversions per variant for meaningful data. Google Play requires at least 100 install decisions per variant. Ending tests early is the most common mistake — small samples produce random results.

What should I test first?

Start with the first screenshot. It carries 60-70% of the conversion weight because most users never swipe. Test the visual (photo vs illustration), the caption (benefit vs feature), or the messaging angle (emotional vs functional).

Can I A/B test without Apple's PPO tool?

Not easily on iOS. Google Play allows store listing experiments for free. For iOS without PPO, you can only compare before/after data when you update screenshots — which is unreliable because other factors change simultaneously.
